Piercing Troubleshooting
Important Piercing Care Guidelines:

Medical Attention:
If you experience any issues with your piercing, seek medical attention immediately and notify your piercer. We are not medical professionals and cannot diagnose skin trauma.

Handling:
Once installed, piercings must not be touched, bumped, or moved in any way.

Common Issues & Actions:
-
Delayed Bleeding from Movement – This requires medical attention. While waiting to be seen, wash hands & apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a paper towel for 15 minutes at a time. Do not remove the jewelry unless advised by a medical professional.
-
Embedded Backing Disc – This requires medical attention. Do not attempt to force the jewelry through the skin. It is an unethical practice for piercers to force jewelry through the skin.
-
Loose or Detached Internally Threaded Top – Wash your hands before attempting to reattach. If you cannot gently set the top onto the post and turn it to the right or clockwise, until secure within a few minutes, set it aside and wait for your piercer’s assistance. The post will usually remain secure during healing as long as you are cautious. Remember: a fresh piercing should not be touched, pulled, or handled unnecessarily.

Signs of Possible Infection:
Seek medical attention right away if you experience:

-
Increasing redness, swelling, or warmth around the piercing site
-
Thick yellow or green discharge
-
Severe pain or throbbing that worsens over time
-
Red streaks extending from the piercing
-
Fever or chills

Troubleshooting Established Piercings:

After your piercing is fully healed, irritation and irritation bumps can still occur, even if it is years later. Established piercings need to stay dry and clean to remain healthy. If you’re noticing signs of irritation, such as clear or yellow discharge, mild swelling, or soreness, it’s important to determine the cause before it worsens. In these cases, 24 hours can make a huge difference.

Common sources of irritation include:

-
Sleeping on the piercing or applying pressure while resting.
-
Headphones, AirPods, arms of Sun Glasses, Eye Glasses or Stethoscopes pressing against the jewelry.
-
Switching out to a hoop too soon.
-
Improper jewelry length:
-
If your post is too short, it can cause pressure and swelling.
-
If your post is too long (like the longer post used for an initial piercing), it may move excessively and irritate the tissue.
-
If swelling is present, a temporary upsize may be needed until the area calms down. Once swelling subsides, you can downsize to a snug, proper fit to prevent movement and friction.

Care Instructions:
-
Clean the piercing with saline spray twice daily.
-
After cleaning—or any time the area gets wet—dry thoroughly using a warm blow dryer on a low setting. Moisture trapped around the piercing can delay healing and contribute to irritation.
-
Wash Hands & Switch Out the top to something smaller, with a low profile that is less likely to snag until healed.
-
Remember that light itchiness equals healing.

If irritation persists or worsens despite troubleshooting, contact your piercer for an in-person assessment.
